Manhattan Plaza: Players on a roof top
On June 8th, New York’s first interactive electronic playground was opened at Manhattan Plaza on 43rd Street. Manhattan Plaza is an affordable housing complex and home to more than 3,500 residents. Thanks to a partnership between Tiki Recreation, Related Affordable and KOMPAN Inc., USA, the Plaza tenants received an incredible playground makeover.
The playground is an innovative approach to the intergenerational playground, featuring among others KOMPAN’s ICON apparatus which encourages children to be active by integrating digi¬tal games into the equipment. The playground is eco-friendly, made with recyclable materials and using the most sustainable practices.
Tiki Recreation is the initiative of former American football star and Giants player
Tiki Barber to help create possibilities for playful physical activity in children’s lives.
A mother of three from Manhattan Plaza, Margaret Kelly Murphy, tells: “My oldest has changed over the last year — he became much more sedentary. I was starting to worry about how to get him off the computer and exercising. Now he begs to go down to the playground.”
